Thanks for the video. But what’s the difference between vocal rider and a standard compressor? I just feel that they both do the same thing in the background and both can achieve the same results! Unless there’s something special about the rider, like being more neutral or transparent than compressors?

Soundtoys do a fantastic reverb for vocals. Very simple interface.no rocket science stuff andit has a great sound.

This is helpful. I actually understand this plug in now. Even the official guide waffles. Thanks.

Great plugin for vocal tracks - I just used it to restore an old Elvis interview from 1962 ;) Subbed!

This VR is placed at the beginning of the chain. But when you write it then it's at the end of the chain (and the channel fader moves with it?) Confused.
TrueSoundStudios 9 months ago
I'm using it to automate the signal before it hits the compressor for a smoother compression sound. It can be used at the end of the chain but i find it more useful this way

You missed the most important feature of the plugin. You must sidechain the mix into the plugin so it reacts to the music. Or else its just reacting to the volume of the vocal, which is totally pointless.
Ola Thomasson 6 days ago
+TrueSoundStudios What if the music is really quiet in the start of the song and then a lot louder? You need the vocal louder too when the music increases. This is the third video I watch on this plug-in. They all say different things. The other guy said the sensitivity button is like a noise gate. And neither tells me about the music function. Where can I find a full explanation, not just what guys have figured out for themselves, leaving features unexplained?

He's not trying to ride the mix dude he's trying to get the initial vocal level even so the vocal hits the compressor equally throughout the whole song. You can go back in and automate the vocal level for the chorus or the louder parts after it runs through the compressors and eqs if you want
SONGWRITERS COVE 1 year ago
If your not side chaining the mix into the plugin, the plugin is not 'riding' the mix, its just reacting to the vocal level,, which defeats the whole purpose of the plugin.
TrueSoundStudios 1 year ago
Yes if you use this plugin at the end of your vocal chain, the sidechain feature will react to the music. But.just like every plugin out there though, there is more than 1 way to use the vocal rider. I use it in the beginning of the chain to automate gain BEFORE it hits the compressors so i have a smooth compression sound. If you used the sidechain feature with the plugin in the beginning of the chain like i did, you would just be jamming more signal into your compressor and defeating the purpose. So i would not say at all that it's totally pointless because if you know about input gain automation, you would understand how this plugin saves time and also is incredible powerful the way i showed it.

i like that plug before compression too i like control the volume before any dynamic process but wave advise to use it in last insert in the chain lol smh ( great vids btw !!)
King Venus OG 1 year ago
true i forgot about this option to react with the instrument because i dont use it. lol but yess its def the reason ;)
TrueSoundStudios 1 year ago
Yesssss! I think they want you to use it at the end of the chain so you can use the sidechain link to the music. It obviously works great at the end but i think it's more useful as the first plugin. Thank for watching, much appreciated!

Is there any plug-in that will prevent the unwanted digital clip? Can the singer scream at will without worry? Running as a compressor or hardware limiter, but only in box plug in? Does this vocal rider do that?
TrueSoundStudios 1 year ago
Hey, so because a plugin comes after the mic preamp and the output of that signal, no plugin would be able to control that. I would look into using a compressor in your vocal chain to help out with clipping. This is what i do for EVERY VOCAL i record. The only other thing to do is work with the artist to better learn acceptable dynamics. Regardless of whatever hardware unit you use, if the singer sings quiet and then goes into a full scream, no piece of gear will be able to help out. Let me know if this helps.

Nice video, keep them coming. You can also put Vocal Rider on a bus and sidechain it to the music so it rides on top of the other tracks.

@Dudley DooRight: i'm just learning how to do things for a year now, i use Studio One 3, in general i will send the 3 vox tracks to a new 'Vocal Rider' Bus (yes a bus is also a track), then i send the 14 other tracks to a new 'Band' Bus (or you can create first Drum/Bass Bus, Guitars Bus, Keyboards Bus etc., then send them all to a 'Band Bus'). Then i INSERT the Vocal Rider plugin on the 'Vocal Rider' Bus, press sidechain (on the plugin), then on the 'Band' Bus SEND it to the Vocal Rider Sidechain (100%). This way your vocals will always sit on top of the instruments, this helps me a lot especially in the chorus parts where all the instruments are usually 'in' and the vocals gets overpowered. Sometimes i send backup vocals in the 'Band Bus' and just the lead vocal on the 'Vocal Rider Bus'. Sorry i don't use Reaper, this is from S1's point of view.
Dudley DooRight 9 months ago
Any chance you can explain a little better how to do this? I just picked this up from Waves for $30 and I'm pretty green to DAW recording. I'm using Reaper. so a bus is just another channel, right? I've got 14 other tracks and 3 vox tracks. Do I put Vocal Rider on each one or on the bus? I'm a little confused and can't find a single video that does this like I keep hearing people say it's supposed to be used. Thanks!
rets mej 11 months ago
so this is a 2-way process, to level the vocal on a track and next is as a sidechain to the music/band bus, i must try this ! nice video anyway, pretty straightforward, thanks !

Thank you, ha yeah i noticed after i already released the video that i forgot that! I'm going to add an annotation in the video. Thanks again!

Thank you! Yeah it also comes with the vocal rider live version when you buy it. I haven't used it but knowing Waves it's gotta be good!
