Who are you, really? The puzzle of personality | Brian Little

What makes you, you? Psychologists like to talk about our traits, or defined characteristics that make us who we are. But Brian Little is more interested in moments when we transcend those traits — sometimes because our culture demands it of us, and sometimes because we demand it of ourselves. Join Little as he dissects the surprising differences between introverts and extroverts and explains why your personality may be more malleable than you think. TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more. I must say that this one of the finest TED talks about the psychology of personality. I love the concept of personality because I believe that we can be anyone whom we want to be. Though this talk specifically focusses on the characteristics of our interaction with the society- introverts or extroverts, the concept of human personality being more malleable and flexible than just being a person of one kind is very amazing. Talking about this TED talk, in particular, this is one of best lines that I liked: What matters is the core project of your life, rather than the binary thought whether or not you are an introverted/extroverted person. And yes, I cannot forget to mention the perfect ending: That's where I'm going now. Don't follow me !! Thank you !!! (Please see the video for the reference!!)

Science will never be able to pin down human beings. Only art can deal with the infinite coil of contradictions and irrational behavior we may manifest at any given moment. Don't believe me? Look at human history and dare to tell me that it makes any sense at all.

Who you are, is always what you come to understand to what you experienced in life. Thats why no 2 same traits will ever be exactly the same. No matter how huge the number of subjects that are involve, since no 2 people will be in the same place at the same time every minute of everyday, that simple. And that includes the siamese twins. since one of them will play the dominant role. Which sees / perceive things differently from the passive one at the same event they witnessed. Im sure, one isnt into to the other one's crush.

There should be different learning methods for students. Some are suitable for extroverts and some are for introverts. But it's shameful that we are only taught and treated in the same way at school or maybe in our families.

Love this. It makes me feel better about myself. I'm an introvert! But I have a question, can extroverts make introverts nervous? I mean, just being around them. My husband's side of the family is full of extroverts, most of whom are pretty hostile too. They all use that simple language too, and they all look down on me because of how quiet and different I am from them. I've been put down so much that just thinking about going anywhere near them causes anxiety and a bit of paranoia (because they spread rumors too.) Is this just because of how they treat me or just because they're so extroverted and I can't keep up with them and how they are? I'm asking because you don't seem nervous speaking to a large group of people, and going by what you're saying, you seem to get along with extroverts ok. How are you able to do that? Do you just understand that introverts and extroverts are different and look over their ways or something?

I would like to point out that the trait of highly sensitive person  which effects 20 % of the population  was not mentioned when he talked about introvert and the trait some times get lumped into introvert. But its not its just newly discovered and until that time the traits unique to the highly sensitive population were under the introvert flag because so many hsp are introverts. check out highlysenstiveperson.com.
